A Space for Rare Finds
Tucked away inside the Piazza Village in Fremantle, sits (Not) Random Magazines. An independent bookstore offering a considered collection of independent publications sourced from across the world, many of which are not readily available in Australia (let alone Perth.) Niche titles that feel less like magazines, and more like objects to be admired and collected.
Behind the space is Anastasia, whose approach to curation is both intuitive and deliberate. Originally from Russia, Anastasia began (Not) Random as an online store in June 2025 as a way of bringing these publications into a local market. What followed was a temporary pop-up in Perth’s CBD in early 2026, which quickly gained momentum after a positive response. It became clear that this wasn’t something people only wanted to browse online.
They wanted to experience it first hand.
The transition into a permanent space feels like a natural evolution of that idea, and a vacant storefront in The Piazza, with large windows and plenty of natural light, made for the perfect backdrop.
The ability to hold something in your hands. To flip through pages slowly. To notice the weight, the paper stock, the way an image sits on a page feels like such a rare pastime in today’s digital age. It’s clearly a sentiment that’s shared, as the (Not) Random space is quickly gaining popularity and becoming known as a destination for publications that exist beyond the mainstream. Titles include conceptual + cult magazines covering fashion, design, architecture, art and more. While I was in the store, a customer came in to buy a magazine he had googled, and the only stockist in Perth was (Not) Random. It’s definitely not the first time. From Apartamento to System, Self Service, and Beauty Papers, rare finds are sourced globally, and specific titles can be brought in on request – a reflection of Anastasia’s eye as well as a level of care that feels increasingly uncommon.
Spending time here, you begin to understand that this is less about retail, and more about a shared experience for art lovers. In many ways, (Not) Random Magazines feels like a response to the pace of modern consumption. We’re invited to slow down, to engage with something tangible and to rediscover the beauty of print. And that sentiment is anything but random.
